Hitting the road with a working spouse

He said, “I miss you guys.”  She said, “We miss you too, babe.”
And that’s how all this began.

Matt had been traveling for ten years. Four to five days a week. Home on weekends. We had our routine down.

When we got married ten years earlier, we had big dreams. A job at a Fortune 500 company. A decorated home with a yard. A 401(k).

We put our heads down. We worked. We worked hard.

Ten years later, we had 3 sweet boys.  A beautiful home. The job. The 401k.

But 48 hours of seeing one another only on weekends wasn’t enough time. We started to realize we were working for dreams we’d already achieved. We needed new priorities. We weren’t the same people as 10 years earlier and so it made sense that our dreams wouldn’t be the same either.

How could we get more time together?

I made the suggestion that we begin to travel with Matt on work trips. Of course! The kids were already homeschooled. Yes! We mapped it out. Within one week, we had six months of travel aligned with his meetings. We booked the plane tickets and tagged along!

What happened over these six months sparked something in us. After coming home from a long day of meetings to our hotel room and hearing about our kids’ days adventuring, learning and exploring new places, and seeing the smiles on their faces, Matt felt like it was all worth it. He was finally getting to see their wonder and he was not missing out. We were doing this. We desired so much to see each other and we were making it happen. We were feeling more joy than we ever expected.

The only problem? When the six months were over, we couldn’t imagine going back to only our weekends together. So we started recalculating once again and figuring out how to make that next move.

It was time to make the biggest change of all so far…..
