Living in a small town

We differed a lot on this decision at first. Matt thought living in a small town would be boring. He used to get anxious if he couldn’t find a reliable internet connection. There’s something soothing to him about the honking horns and sirens of a big city. But… at the same time, he loves the sound of a mountain stream right outside the backdoor.

As for me, I relish time to myself and would be happy doing hours of yoga and watching an episode or two of Tiny House and House Hunters International. I love to know what people are paying to rent a one bedroom villa in Uruguay or how someone manages to create space beneath a small flight of stairs for their entire wardrobe. But… I mean, I am not exactly your classic small-town girl. Costco is my main squeeze. Who doesn’t need a 4 lb bag of edamame?  I might have to walk instead of darting around town in my SUV. I might have to give up hustling around and running errands. But I knew my heart needed a new pace, a change for the better.

Developing and growing a business was demanding and time consuming. We started to wonder if we filled our time and unconsciously made our lives busy to feel content and satisfied. No time to daydream, no time to grow personally, no time to think. No time outside. All three boys have a fierce love of skiing. Nature is one of our love languages. And we’d spent time in mountain towns throughout Colorado over the years.

The answer was clear: we’d simplified our lives and now it was time to slow down the pace. Breckenridge seemed like the perfect place to plant some roots for a while. All of these options (though a little terrifying) were enough to make us say “yes” to this next step. We were ready to try and we were in it together.

What is small town living? It's noticing the same locals when you walk down Main Street. It's having a local pizza shop where they know the kid's names. It's knowing all the twists and turns on your daily hiking trail. It's walking instead of driving. It is waking up and not feeling panicked thinking of all the obligations that day. It’s family dinners and game nights. It’s finishing school early to snag a couple ski runs on the mountain on a Wednesday. It's slow. It's purposeful. It's an adjustment.

While this may not be a forever place for us. We love it for now.... minus the June snowstorms. :)
