What I Thought We Were Going to Do on the Amalfi Coast vs. What We Really Did
The Amalfi Coast. I had seen pictures and dreamed of this place for as long as I could remember. It was a little shocking to actually be there!
My plans were to:
Sip wine at a cute cafe and eat pizza.
Sit on the beach.
Admire the views.
That was it. I would have been a happy camper. BUT the whole experience was far more exciting. Of course!
During our time there we:
Experienced our first scheister.
Traveling has taught us that there are good people everywhere. Nice, kind, and honest. But the night before we were set to check in to our Air BNB, I received an email from the host asking me to call her. The call resulted in her telling me in order to check into our apartment the next day we would need to bring the money to her in cash. Sketchy. Yep. So, I immediately pop online to see what else we could find for accommodations. Last minute, in the middle of the summer, on the Amalfi Coast for 5 people. Zilch availability. So, the next day we show up, cash in hand. Looking back our only guess is that she approaches her business this way as it is the only way to keep her good reviews on the AirBNB site. How it works is you find her place on the site and reserve it. She cancels your AirBnb reservation at the last minute and requests cash knowing there isn’t availability elsewhere. You then can’t leave a review on the Air Bnb site. The apartment was probably once in great shape but was now falling apart. The only shower wouldn't drain- good thing we could rinse off at the beach. We would sweep in the morning and come back in the afternoon to find termite dust covering the floors and pieces of drywall falling off- good thing most of our days were spent exploring. But you know what. It is all part of traveling. The good with the bad. We feel that the view from the patio made it all worth it!
2. Climbed a LOT of stairs.
Oh yeah. Quad burn and all. Up and down. No wonder the Italians live so long. This stairwell was one of ten it took to get into town from our apartment
3. Fell in love with Ravello.
In researching the villages that comprise the Amalfi Coast we had read so many wonderful things about Positano and Amalfi but I should have known it would have been a smaller seaside village that stole my heart. Ravello is a hidden treasure. Perched high on the mountain top overlooking the coastline the medieval city with it stone pathways and garden pathways is enchanting.
4. Pop over to Capri.
I thought this was going to be a bit too touristy for our taste. But it wasn't. Worth it!
Addio Amalfi Coast.
