Thailand and the Intrepid Travelers
We had never been to Asia. We had never used a tour company. I like planning and researching....snagging a deal or discovering a hidden spot BUT there is something to be said for just going along for the ride.
That is where Intrepid Travelers comes in. https://www.intrepidtravel.com/us A small group, adventure travel company. Perfect for the intrepid traveler.
Here are the top 5 reasons why a tour company made this stop a favorite!
Knowing what to eat and where to eat it.
Of course we wanted to try TFB (Thai fried bugs) but sort of figured you don’t just want to opt for any old bug stand. Our stop- the most inconspicuous table, at a night market, in a small town. On the menu- crickets and meal worms.
2. Planes, trains and automobiles.
There aren’t a ton of cars and we wanted to experience the tuk tuk, trains, buses and boating down the canals by way of transportation but weren’t exactly sure how to make this happen with two adults, three kids and a bunch of luggage. A tour guide equals less worries and a built in knowledge bank of how to’s.
3. The best of everything.
Staying in a high rise in Bangkok. Living in a village for two days and exploring the rainforests with a native medicine woman. A day spent on the beach that the king vists. A afternoon chat with a monk. Beers at the center market. A visit to the elephant sanctuary to feed and wash the elephants. We did it all and didn’t have to plan a thing- just show up. Sign me up.
4. Have someone on stand by for emergencies.
Matt had major back issues during this part of our trip which required a visit to a doctor and the hospital. Our tour guide took him there, translated for the doctors and helped with medication. Literally a life saver.
5. Ask questions all day, every day.
I think of weird things when I travel. Like what time do the kids go to school, how much does it cost to go to the dentist, where do you buy milk, how exactly does a squat toilet work .... a local tour guide could answer every. single. question. and many times with an accompanying story. Amazing.
Did it cost a bit more. Yep. Was it well worth it. Yep, a thousand times over!
Goodbye (Lā k̀xn) Thailand!
